Audio: David talks with Jerry Michalski

David Allen talks with Jerry Michalski, for a look inside Jerry's brain, as documented by his extensive use of TheBrain . Over the years you may have heard David talk about his use of TheBrain. Jerry is one of the earliest adopters, and has tracked an astounding number of ideas and their interconnections. By using TheBrain, Jerry says it shifts him from system 1 thinking (fast) to system 2 thinking (slow). He describes the need for a fundamental shift from thinking of ourselves as consumers to thinking of ourselves as citizens. He also talks about the importance of designing systems that start from trust, which get better results that cost less and have terrific side effects, like rebuilding community and releasing our inherent genius.

You'll also hear him mention OGM, which stands for Open Global Mind .

Audio: David Allen talks with Brandon Hensinger - July 2020 (audio)

David Allen has a fascinating talk with Brandon Hensinger, Founder and CEO of Avrio Genetics .

Brandon has started various companies, from rock climbing to pharmaceuticals. He has a passion for taking startups or small companies and growing them fast. Along the way, GTD has been a key to managing the increasing complexity and responsibility in his life.

He says most people don't have much of a system to keep themselves organized, other than their email inbox. For his new employees, he recommends that they read Getting Things Done . He also has them start with a list of projects and items they are waiting for. This allows them to have more productive meetings with colleagues, right from the start.

His advice for sharing GTD with others? Don't just give advice. Show them. Give them a demonstration.

You can find out much more about Brandon on his website .

Also, check out Brandon interviewing David .

Audio: David Allen interviews Dan Greenleaf - January 2020 (audio)

As you listen to David's interview with Dan Greenleaf, you'll hear a theme of service in his present and past work. He is currently the CEO of Providence Service Corporation , following work in several other large healthcare services companies. Prior to his business career, he was a captain and navigator in the US Air Force. You'll hear the pilot training in his "plan the flight, then fly the plan" approach to projects. Dan notes that as life has gotten more complex, GTD is the best tool for allowing him to be present with other people.

Memorable quote: "If you want to scale your time, talent, and treasures, GTD is the way to go."

Audio: David Allen talks with Bruce Fetzer - October 2019

Bruce Fetzer took a productivity training with David Allen in the 1980s. Since then he has been applying what he learned. His work with the John E. Fetzer Memorial Trust has been his major focus in the last few years. The mission of the trust is to advance integrated, relational views of reality through exploring scientific frontiers and universal spiritual practices. David Allen engages Bruce in a discussion of the role of business in doing good work through meta-science, or the study of the scientific method. They also explore how to integrate inner life with outer action.

There is a free biography of John E. Fetzer available from the Fetzer Trust site.

Audio: David Allen talks with Brian Robertson - May 2019

This is a fascinating, wide-ranging conversation between David Allen and Brian Robertson. It begins with Brian noting that they've recorded talks before, and how they'd like to cover new territory in this one. They discuss how we as humans relate to our own attention, and how the increasing complexity of our work environment has necessitated that we get stuff off our minds. In a nod to the Three-fold Nature of Work, they agree on the need to get everyone in the company involved in the work of defining the work. Naturally, they point out multiple common threads between Getting Things Done for individuals and Holacracy for organizations. They also consider what happens after your personal system and your organization's system are on cruise control.

Audio: Davd Allen chats with William Elliott

David explores the psychology of productivity with William Elliott, a counseling psychologist and GTD master trainer in South Africa. William describes his own journey with attention-deficit disorder, and finding GTD as a support for becoming more organized. He has wise words about how humility and accepting our limitations can improve our productivity and the overall quality of our lives. You'll likely resonate with his description of the background stress around "What do I say no to?" and how GTD helps with decision making and prioritizing. Regarding what's on our lists, he notes that there is an advance beyond safely ignoring to reach comfortably ignoring. Responding to a question from David, William says that his "brain has accepted that GTD is the life raft."

Audio: In Conversation with Daniel Levitin

Join David for a fascinating, wide-ranging conversation with Daniel Levitin, whose latest book is The Organized Mind . Daniel is a professor of psychology, a cognitive scientist, a musician, an entrepreneur, and more. He brings recent cognitive research to bear on GTD, validating obectively what GTDers know subjectively -- that getting things off your mind frees your mind for more creative and productive thinking. David and Daniel discuss why the brain pays attention to some things and ignores others, the limits of short-term memory versus long-term memory, and why the Mind Sweep is not just a good idea, but a critical part of dealing with our modern lives. In addition to The Organized Mind , Daniel is the author of the book This Is Your Brain On Music , which stayed on The New York Times and The Globe and Mail bestseller lists for more than 16 months and was named among the Top 20 books of 2006 by The Globe and Mail. The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature debuted on The New York Times list, reached #1 on The Globe and Mail bestseller list, and was named one of the best books of the year by the Boston Herald and Seed magazine.
